FAST COMPANY – Many CEOs work long hours, with a Harvard study finding an average of 62.5 hours a week and 79% working weekends. Samsung has mandated a six-day workweek for leaders after a poor financial year, reflecting a flawed approach to leadership. Overworking can harm decision-making, productivity, and health.
Key reasons for overworking include a sense of duty, tying self-worth to work, lack of trust in others, and a belief that stress is normal. To avoid burnout and maintain effectiveness, leaders should build awareness of triggers, prioritize and delegate tasks, focus on high-impact activities, reject the myth that leadership should be hard, build a support network, understand the ripple effect of their behavior, value their health, and set boundaries.
