If it feels vindictive, then you should not consider that review as heavily as others that seem more objective. The same is true in the opposite direction. If the review is over the top in praise of a company then is also should be discounted some. This will help you get some middle ground.
Internet marketing can absolutely work to increase your business. However, it can also just cost a lot of money, so it is important that you find a company that can get results for you. However, you should also remember to be patient because results take time with internet marketing.
