What is Google Adsense?

To make a long story short, Adsense is a program, offered by Google that allows blog and website owners to earn money by allowing Google to place Adwords advertisements on their blogs or websites. At one time this was touted as the quickest way to begin bringing in easy money from the Internet month after month. Now it seems that everyone and their brother, cousins, nieces and nephews twice removed is trying to get in on the Adsense action.

Is it really THAT easy?

Not really. You need to do a lot more than just place random ads on your blog or web page and wait for the revenues to start rolling on. That doesn’t mean it is impossible either. There are plenty of people who have made great money over the years through Adsense income. It is possible today though there are other programs out there that may give you a little more flexibility than Adsense. In other words, Google, while still king of the hill, is no longer the only game in town. Adsense is far from obsolete but those who are serious about making money online have discovered that there are faster ways to bring in the money than waiting for the Adsense ship to come in.

What do you NEED to make money with Adsense?

This is a good question to ask. The long and short answer is (insert drum roll here) traffic. The more people who visit your blog or web page the greater the possibility that someone among them will click on one of the Adsense ads that are displayed on your site. These clicks translate to revenue from pennies to dollars for you and can add up over time.

There are many complicated formulas you can learn that will give you the odds of creating an income in certain niche markets. You will need to consider these and how much the clicks are worth before you decide how much time, effort, energy, and resources you want to devote to your efforts to make money through Adsense.

Like most things in life, you will make more money with Adsense if you put more effort into it. It is important though to learn specific approaches that will make you money rather than spending untold hours each day in efforts that aren’t focused and aren’t productive. There is money to be made in Adsense, there is also a pretty significant learning curve. Be sure you spend time learning the ropes before going in all gung ho trying to create Adsense riches.

Too often do webmasters go for the “frontal assault” when trying to win a niche, which more often than not results in their competition finding out about them, then pushing them out of the game with their strong list of long tail rankings. So, what can you do in order to dominate your niche and become an authority?

Google Ranks Based On Relevancy

Amongst other things in their complex algorithm, Google ranks websites in their index based on site relevancy. So, a site that ranks for one topic may rank quite well in Google, however another site that ranks for that same topic, plus several other related keywords would appear to Google as being more informative, and getter value per search for the end user.

At the end of the day, what needs to be kept in mind that if people stop searching in Google, there will be no Google. So, as a means of making sure that people are happy with their search engine, they must incorporate certain features into their algorithm so that results are as relevant as possible. As a result, SEO is the process of understanding what we can confirm from this very little understood algorithm.

A Long Tail Rich Site Will Rank Well

As a result of the above, a website that ranks well for a variety of related keywords, will always rank naturally for the main keyword. This is how Google delivers relevant results to their end user and keeps people coming back time and time again. Accordingly, a website that contains no real content, but tries to rank for one main keyword will always struggle in the search engines.

The trouble here is that a natural part of completing any off page SEO campaign on a website will almost always result in ranking for your main keyword along with several other long tail keywords. So, what can we do to make this process work out better.

Rank In The Long Tail First

An authority website in your niche will generally rank well for a very large number of keywords, and as such, they will find it hard to track the performance of all of these keywords. Hence the phrase, “rank in the long tail first”. This is also referred to as being a sneak attack, and the flanking maneuver, meaning that it is easier to sneak up on your competition, and dominate in your niche without them realizing it until you have dominated.

The process is simple. Research your niche, and the topics that you want to write about. Once you have identified a set of long tail keywords, initially focus around 80% of your time on ranking for these keywords via the usual methods of SEO. Once you can see that you have started dominating for these keywords, then shift your focus onto a 50/50 long tail and ego keyword basis. By this time, your competition will have spotted you, however, they will have no other option but to watch you climb all over them.

Who Is Your Audience?

Understanding the type of people who visit your site is a very important task because you can use that information to enhance your site to suit them. As a result, you will gain more loyal returning visitors that come back again and again for more.

What is the age level and what kind of knowledge does your audience have? A layman might linger around a general site on gardening, but a professional botanist might turn his nose at the very same site. Similarly, a regular person will leave a site filled with astronomy abstracts but a well educated university graduate will find that site interesting.

Take your audience’s emotional state into consideration when building your site. If a very irritated visitor searches for a solution and comes across your site, you will want to make sure you offer the solution right up front and sell or promote your product to him second. In this way, the visitor will put his trust in you for offering the solution to his problems and is more likely to buy your product when you offer it to him after that.

When you design the layout for your site, you have to take into account the characteristics of your audience. Are they old or young people? Are they looking for trends or are they just looking for information served without any icing on the cake? For example, introducing a new, exciting game with a simple, straightforward black text against white background page will definitely turn prospects away. Make sure your design suits your site’s general theme.

Try to sprinkle colloquial language in your sites sparingly where you see fit and you will create a sense that your audience is on common ground with you. This in turn builds a trusting relationship between you and your audience, which will come in useful should you want to market a product to your audience.
