What is Social Media And How Can You Use it to Build a List? (Part 1 of 2)

Who else wants tons of free traffic, free backlinks, new subscribers and more money? All of this (and more) can be yours when you start using social media sites to drive targeted traffic to your site and onto your mailing list!

Now before we jump into the details, lets define social media. Basically, social media sites are those where like-minded individuals (niche groups) can meet, network and share information. The most popular types of social media sites include:

1) Social networking sites. These are sites like MySpace.com, Facebook.com, Friendster.com and LinkedIn.com. Here, people with common interests can network, get on each others friends lists, keep their friends updated using bulletins (internal emails) and blog posts, etc.

2) Social bookmarking sites. These are sites like Digg.com, Reddit.com, StumbleUpon.com, Propeller.com and similar. The idea behind these sites is that users can share interesting web pages with other members.

Members rate and review pages the more good ratings and reviews, the more these pages are seen by other people and that means these sorts of sites work hand-in-hand with viral content.

3) Social Content Sites. These content sites include YouTube and other video-sharing sites, Squidoo and other user-generated pages, Yahoo! Answers and other community question/answer platforms, and similar.

Like the other social media sites, these content sites integrate social networking. However, the content sites are primarily known for their content and for the love that Google gives them. (That means if you optimize your pages for long-tail keywords, you can snag top rankings in Google.)

If you want to start using social media sites to drive traffic to your site and subscribers onto your newsletter list, remember this: These sites dont operate in a vacuum. The more you use them together, the more powerful the strategy becomes and the more traffic youll see.

For example, lets suppose you create a video to post on YouTube. You should then:

* Use Digg, StumbleUpon.com and similar to bookmark the video.

* Post the video on your social networking sites (like MySpace) and alert your friends list.

* Post the video on your other content sites like Squidoo and HubPages.

* And blog about it on all of your social media sites.

In other words, your accounts on all these different sites give you plenty of opportunities to link your social profiles and pages together as well as sending links back to your own site.

Now that you know a bit about how these sites work and how you can use them to drive traffic to your own site, youre probably wondering how, exactly, you can leverage them for links, traffic and sales. Youll discover plenty of tips to do just that in Part 2 of this article series.

Use Multiple Marketing Methods in Your Affiliate Marketing Business

There are various ways to promote your products and to advertise your affiliate marketing business and it may take some trial and error to find the right method or methods that work well for you. Try not to use only one method, at least at first, because it may take some time to see which methods bring the most revenue.

Marketing Methods

You are probably already familiar with many of the popular Internet marketing methods used in affiliate marketing today but well name a few of them here.

Pay Per Click Advertising (PPC) This is when you, the advertiser pay a certain amount of money every time someone clicks on your ads. Different keywords cost various amounts of money per click. Marketers bid on the keywords they want to run ads for.

Forum Marketing You join online discussion forums that are dedicated to your niche. You post relevant comments, and you may ask and answer questions. The key here is to get known as an expert in your niche. While you dont openly market your products here, you include a link in your signature line that leads back to your website or product sales page.

Article Marketing You write articles or pay others to write them and submit them to article directories. The articles contain information relevant to your niche and depending upon the article directory, you either include links in the body of your article or in the resource box at the end of your article.

Email Marketing This is not a very viable option without a website of your own but it can be done. With email marketing, you collect email addresses from those interested in your niche. Most of the time this is done by offering something of value, usually free, to subscribers. You might offer an ecourse, ebook, or a newsletter. Interested parties type in their name and email address and they receive whatever it is you have promised. If they have also agreed to receive subsequent emails from you, you can then send out periodic emails to your list advertising your product or promoting a special price on your product .

Test Your Marketing Methods

In order to know which marketing method or methods are working best for you, youll need to test them and track where your sales are coming from. Sometimes, marketers do what is known as split testing. An example of split testing would be when the affiliate marketer is offering the same exact product through two or more marketing methods. Then the marketer will track where the sales are coming from and have a clear sense of which method is working best. You will likely need to perform testing throughout your affiliate marketing career to stay on top of the game.
